Over Memorial weekend, my family was up at our house in Galena.

Galena is a beautiful, rural and old-time town in the Northwest corner of Illinois.  There is great fishing at Lake Galena, interesting stores downtown, awesome hiking opportunities, and you can even go hot air ballooning over dense woods and scenery near Galena.

Anyways back to fishing, on Monday I was shore bound so ended up fishing Small Pox Creek.  The creek was dammed up in 1973 to create Lake Galena.  It's a pretty decent size for a stream, but I had never even thought of fishing it until that Monday.

When we got there, I was surprised right away when a small creek chub took my wooly bugger.  The rest of the outing was spent hiking up and down through the woods/prairie and catching small creek chub.  My grandpa also came along and had a fun time pulling them in using night crawlers.

It was a great way to spend the morning, and an interesting change of scenery from the lake.  Also, I got some great practice battling trout-like fish, hopefully it helps prepare me for a fly fishing trip to Aspen that's coming up soon.
