Fly Fishing NW Illinois

Over Memorial weekend, my family was up at our house in Galena. 

Galena is a beautiful, rural and old-time town in the Northwest corner of Illinois.  There is great fishing at Lake Galena, interesting stores downtown, awesome hiking opportunities, and you can even go hot air ballooning over dense woods and scenery near Galena.

Anyways back to fishing, on Monday I was shore bound so ended up fishing Small Pox Creek.  The creek was dammed up in 1973 to create Lake Galena.  It's a pretty decent...

Fly Fishing for Panfish Saturday

Well, I finally was able to get out for my first fly fishing outing of the year so far.  I went to Lake Arlington in Arlington Heights for about an hour to have some fun battling the bream.

I started out with a yellow foam beetle, and immediately hooked up on my first cast.  Through trial and error, I've found that the best way to fish these foam beetles is like a bass bug with short erratic strips.  If I casted and let it sit there, no one seemed interested.

Why do we tie flies?

I think every fly tier asks him/herself this question at some point or another.

Do I tie becuase its fun?  Do I tie because I like designing my own patterns?  Do I tie for money or commercially?  Do I tie to save money? And the list seems to go on for eternity....

For me, I tie for all these reasons and more (except maybe tying commercially).  Ask any avid fly tier and fisher, and almost all of them will describe to you a feeling like no other when you catch a fish on something you made with...
